James Ward returns to victory lane in warm-up to Sunday night's big race Baton Rouge, Louisiana (May 16, 2003) - James Ward recorded his fifth victory of the season in O'Reilly Late Model competition as he prepped for the big Memorial Day Blowout. The night started off with Kevin Watts and David Ashley winning the heat races but in the feature it was all James Ward as he used his outside front row starting position to power by Watts as they raced side-by-side onto the backstretch. Ward maintained the lead and held off David Ashley's challenge to take the win. Jerry Bevis survived a position swapping battle with Kevin Watts to take third over Watts and Eric Courville rounded out the top 5. Roy Schnebelen topped the Coca-Cola UMP Modifieds after an early side-by-side battle for the lead with Darron Carroll. Carroll held on to second ahead of Mark Chamel, Scotty Covington and Dow Hillhouse. Schnebelen and Chamel won the heat races. Bo Garig returned to the Pure Stock victory lane and now leads all Baton Rouge Raceway competitors with 6 wins on the season. Garig moved by early race leader Mark Hardwick to take the win. Hardwick held on the second ahead of Leonard Barrilou and Tommy Bush. Richie Ginn and Mark Hardwick started the night off with heat race victories. Jason WIlks continues to set the pace in Street Stock competition at Baton Rouge Raceway. Wilks swept the heat race and feature victories. Wilks started on the pole and led every lap in the caution free feature. Tommy Cannon finished second followed by Jimmy Stephens, Daniel Jessup and David Johnson.
