Same Name, Different Cassano
Baton Rouge, Louisiana (April 11, 2003) - Jerry Cassano has dominated UMP action at Baton Rouge Raceway and a Cassano made it to the UMP Modified victory circle once again but this time it was Jerry's son Chris taking the win. Jerry Cassano and son Chris took the heat wins. They made up the front row on the start. It was Jerry that took the lead first followed by Chris. Halfway through the race Chris pulled beside Jerry and they ran wheel to wheel. The second half the race Chris and Jerry ran wheel to wheel. Finally as they came off four for the checkered Chris pulled about a foot past Jerry and took the win by a nose.
Roger Flynn and David Johnson shared the heat wins for street stock. On the start of the feature Flynn shot into the lead followed by Johnson.
With each lap Flynn put more real-estate between him and second place Johnson. Yellow flew when a bumper laid in the middle of one and two. On the restart it was Flynn again leading the way. Again with each lap he got further away. Flynn went on to score the win by several car lengths. All David Johnson could do was helplessly watch the rear of Flynn's car get further away. Johnson finished second. Edmond third, Jason Wilks fourth and rounding out the top five was Garry Talbert.
Pure stock heat winners were Bo Garig and Justin Bowman. Garig took the lead on the start. Mark Hardwick moved into second and followed close to Garig lap after lap, but had to settle for second behind Bo Garig the winner. Eric McCallister took third followed by Troy Dean and Timothy Moran.
James Ward and Jerry Bevis were the late model heat winners. Ward blasted into the lead like he was shot from a cannon. With each lap Ward just pulled further away from the field. Bevis lost second to Chris Wall. Ward went on to score the win by a straightaway over Chris wall. Bevis was running third and spun on the last lap. Eric Courville then took third. Bill Gordon started in the rear of the field and worked his way through traffic to finish fourth. Kennith Crowe finished fifth.
