Terry Phillips Takes First Leg of Challenge
81 Speedway (Wichita, KS) – May 18th - The 2001 O’Reilly NCRA/SUPR Challenge turned into a reunion of the MLRA as 2-time MLRA Champion and current O’Reilly MARS Champion Terry Phillips topped 2-time MLRA champions Leslie Essary and Al Purkey to claim the win at 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas. Phillips driving the Sportsman Pickup Covers/Hermanator GRT claimed his third win on the NCRA tour and his second on the SUPR circuit. Terry Phillips from Springfield, Missouri chased down and passed Coffeyville, Kansas’ Al Purkey after Purkey led for more than half of the race. Phillips was able to move past Purkey to take the lead and the win while Leslie Essary also closed in and moved by Purkey to grab second. Kyle Berck and Larry McDaniels rounded out the top 5.
47 Late Models were on hand for the event that drew cars from each of the five series sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts. Phillips currently leads the standings on the O’Reilly MARS circuit, while the O’Reilly All Stars was well represented by the Kosiski brothers Steve and Joe. Al Purkey currently rests atop the MLRA standings, as does David Ashley in the SUPR standings. Larry McDaniels, the 7-time NCRA champion led the charge for the NCRA competitors.
This was the first event of the 2001 NCRA season after the first two events were rained out while it was the 10th stop on the SUPR tour. The NCRA Challenge will continue next weekend with a two-day swing through Louisiana with stops at Baton Rouge Raceway and Boothill Speedway and will conclude with a special 2-day 4th of July show at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.
