Magnolia State Championship Series
Baton Rouge, LA (May 3, 2001) - The O’Reilly Southern United Professional Racing (SUPR) Late Models will kick off the 2001 Magnolia State Championship Series this Saturday night, May 5th at Pike County Speedway in McComb, Mississippi. Jay Blair, the 2000 O’Reilly SUPR Champion is also the defending Magnolia State Championship. Blair claimed the title in spectacular fashion as he charged from 21st to 1st to win the 3rd and final leg of the Magnolia State Championship to clinch the title. The top 2 point earners in the Magnolia State Championship Series are guaranteed a starting spot in the 5th Annual Jambalaya 100 in October.. Blair has returned to championship form as he won his first O’Reilly SUPR event of the year two weeks ago at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas. Blair followed up that victory with a runner-up finish last Saturday night at Thunder Valley Speedway in Glenmora, Louisiana. Be currently leads the 2001 O’Reilly SUPR Championship but only the slimmest of margins as he is just 6 points in front of 1999 O’Reilly SUPR Champion, David Ashley. Ashley has been the most consistent driver on the tour with 6 Top 10 finishes in 7 races including 4 Top 5 finishes. But while Blair and Ashley battle up front for the point lead, Dennis Duncan has garnered the most attention as he has reeled off 3 wins in the first 7 races of the season, including a win last Saturday night at Thunder Valley Speedway as he held off both Blair and Ashley for the win.
Odie Green and Kennith Crowe are the leading contenders for the Behind the Wheel/Ashley Brothers Rookie for the Year title and they are expected to continue their battle for the rookie title at Pike County.
